Beca Post-doc en la Universidad Católica del Maule

El Laboratorio de Investigaciones Tecnológicas en Reconocimiento de Patrones (LITRP, www.litrp.ucm.cl) de la Universidad Católica del Maule (www.ucm.cl)  busca candidato para patrocinarlo en la postulación a Beca de Posdoctorado CONICYT, Gobierno de Chile. La Universidad Católica del Maule se encuentra en Talca, ciudad del centro del país con excelente conectividad con  Santiago, capital del país (3 horas en bus). Talca es una ciudad universitaria,  capital de la Región del Maule, con aproximadamente 250.000 habitantes,  de una excelente calidad de vida, costo  vida dentro de los más bajos de Chile. La Cordillera de los Andes y el Océano Pacífico se encuentran a 2 horas en automóvil .

EL candidato debe ser joven doctor en Ciencias de la Computación o afín, que ya tenga ha su haber publicaciones en revistas indexadas (en la postulación se deberá informar un máximo de 10). Su área de desarrollo debe estar entre los siguientes campos: Image Processing, Pattern Recognition, Data Minning, Computer Vision.

El LITRP (www.litrp.cl) es un Laboratorio de Investigación que está en crecimiento, y que ha ganado proyectos competitivos financiados por el CONICYT del Gobierno de Chile,   con 5 investigadores  con publicaciones en revistas indexadas anuales, estudiantes de ingeniería y posgrado realizando tesis. El laboratorio cuenta con máquinas de computo de alto desempeño, y equipos de medición : ambientes controlados de iluminación para imágenes calibradas, colorímetro, espectrómetros VIS-NIR, sistema de adquisición de señales cerebrales, escáner y plataforma para detección de huella digital, cámara infrarojo-térmico.  Actualmente nuestros proyectos y vías de desarrollo son las siguientes:  La creación de tecnología para control de calidad en procesos agrícolas (vino, olivas, berries), métodos de  reconocimiento de personas basadas en análisis de texto, tratamiento de imágenes médicas (ultrasonido, PET), aplicaciones industriales para interfaces avanzadas de control  de señales eléctricas del cerebro. Contamos con colaboraciones y conexiones activas de investigación con centros de investigación de  Francia, Australia, Estados Unidos, España, Brasil, Argentina.

El candidato tiene la posibilidad de insertarse en docencia posgrado a nivel de Magister y doctorado según competencias y nivel de productividad científicas dentro de su estadía de posdoctorado.

Aspectos Generales

  • Duración: 2 o 3 años
  • Participantes: Un(a) Investigador(a) Responsable con grado académico de Doctor, con patrocinio institucional y un(a) Investigador(a) Patrocinante con al menos media jornada (22 hrs. semanales) en la Institución Patrocinante del proyecto.
  • Pueden postular a este concurso investigadores(as) que hayan obtenido el grado académico de Doctor a contar del1 de enero de 2014 y hasta el 30 de noviembre de 2017
  • El(La) Investigador(a) Responsable que a la fecha de cierre de patrocinio institucional se encuentre en posesión del grado de Doctor, deberá adjuntar a la postulación fotocopia simple del grado de Doctor, o en su defecto, certificado emitido por la Dirección de Postgrado correspondiente u otro documento, en que acredite la aprobación de la defensa pública de su tesis de Doctor. Si el(la) postulante realizó estudios en instituciones extranjeras, deberá presentar una certificación emitida por la autoridad competente, que acredite la fecha en que obtuvo el grado de doctor o que ha cumplido con los requisitos para su obtención. Quienes no estén en condiciones de dar cumplimiento a este requisito a la fecha de cierre del concurso, deberán contar con esta certificación al30 de noviembre de 2016. Los (Las) postulantes que resulten adjudicados, deberán enviar esta certificación por el medio que el Programa FONDECYT informe, en caso contrario, quedará sin efecto la adjudicación.
  • Toda postulación debe contar con dos (2) cartas de recomendación de investigadores(as) nacionales o extranjeros(as). La postulación quedará fuera de bases si el (la) Investigador(a) Patrocinante enviara una carta de recomendación para el(la) investigador(a) que patrocina. La solicitud de recomendación se realizará a través del Sistema de Postulación en Línea y la recepción de ambas cartas condicionará el envío de su postulación a la solicitud de patrocinio institucional. No se aceptarán cartas por otra vía, salvo que FONDECYT lo requiera.

Financiamiento

  • El monto máximo de financiamiento que se puede solicitar para un proyecto es de$ 25.140.000 (veinticinco millones ciento cuarenta mil pesos) para cada año de ejecución. Esta suma no incluye los Gastos de Instalación que puede solicitar para el primer año, ni la asignación por concepto de beneficio de salud que será asignado por FONDECYT a los proyectos aprobados.
  • Honorarios: FONDECYT asignará $ 20.640.000 (veinte millones seiscientos cuarenta mil pesos) por año, que serán entregados en una o más cuotas anuales, dependiendo de la disponibilidad presupuestaria de CONICYT. Estos recursos se declaran mediante boleta de honorarios y e l(la) Investigador(a) Responsable deberá, adicionalmente, iniciar actividades ante el Servicio de Impuestos Internos (SII) para su posterior tributación. Aproximadamente 1.500.000 pesos líquidos mensuales (sueldo aproximado de un profesor que lleva 2 a 3 años en la universidad).
  • Viajes y/o Gastos de Operación: $4.500.000 (cuatro millones quinientos mil pesos)por cada año de ejecución.
  • Beneficio de salud:FONDECYT asignará a los(las) Investigadores(as) Responsables de proyectos aprobados en este Concurso, la suma de $456.000 (cuatrocientos cincuenta y seis mil pesos) por concepto anual de beneficio de saludNo debe incluir esta cantidad en la solicitud de recursos.
  • Gastos de Instalación: hasta $3.000.000 (tres millones de pesos), en el primer año de ejecución. Postdoc position at TU Berlin (The deadline for applying is November 1, 2016)

The Technical University of Berlin has an opening for a three year postdoc position in mathematics (salary grade E13) starting in 2017. The successful candidate will be part of Berlin Mathematical School and conduct independent research in the Berlin based team of Prof. Felipe Cucker (CityU Hong Kong) and Prof. Peter Burgisser (TU Berlin). The postdoc position is funded by Professor Cucker’s Einstein Visiting Fellowship “Complexity and accuracy of numerical algorithms in algebra and geometry” and does not involve teaching duties.

We are seeking a postdoc who has already done successful research in one of the areas of complexity theory, applied algebraic geometry, complexity and accuracy of numerical algorithms, and ideally wishes to continue to work in the intersection of these subjects.

Berlin has an abundance of activitities in all areas of mathematics, fostered by the three Berlin Universities (FU, HU, TU), the research centers ECMath, Matheon, WIAS and several collaborative research centers. The Berlin Mathematical School (BMS) is a joint graduate school of the mathematics departments of FU, TU and HU, with over 200 students and funded by the German Excellence Initiative. There are plenty of possibilities for collaboration and interaction with other scientists. Moreover, Berlin is an attractive and lively world city.

Since a couple of years, I am organizing and heading a special master’s program in informatics / computer science with a couple of unique features:

–  the entire program is in English
–  the master thesis projects are on real-life projects in close cooperation with Austrian IT companies
–  the curriculum of each student is designed in order to allow specialization in the area of thesis project
–  in addition to the informatics courses,  we offer a series of courses and trainings on general skills that turn out to be more and more important for the future careers of  informatics graduates
–  the program is carried out in close cooperation with RISC (Research Institute for Symbolic Compuation), the RISC Software Company, and the Softwarepark Hagenberg (a spin-off of RISC with its own start-up program)

PhD Studentship in the field of Signal and Image processing

“Automatic Segmentation and Recognition of Human Actions in Video Sequences:
Application to safety/security in public transport”

Project Outline:
In public transport, passengers’ feeling of insecurity can be reduced by reducing and managing incidents such as
aggression. The conventional solution adopted by public transport operators is the deployment of human agents
and  CCTV coverage in  stations and onboard vehicles. Studies carried out by the International Public Transport
Union (UITP) has concluded that the majority of agressions take place onboard vehicles leading to an increase
in the number of onboard CCTV (e.g. 10 cameras/bus in London). This increase in the number of installed onboard cameras  cannot be matched by a corresponding increase in the
number of people monitoring those cameras. That is why research and development on automatic surveillance is an
important issue.

This work will focus on the investigation, implementation and evaluation of computer vision methods capable of
monitoring and detecting human behaviour (individual actions and interactions) in situations of close (near)
camera views, specially those with rapidly varying illumination environments. The focus of study is on-board
environments  (trains, buses, metros) where there is a societal need to increase the use of public transport,
by making such systems more attractive to the public from a security and a safety point of view.

The PhD work will consist in bringing effective advancements in pedestrian detection, action and interaction
recognition in very constrained environments. Progress is still needed in the following main areas:

  • Detection of people and their silhouettes (outlines+body) from which to extract features indicative of actions,
    such as visual hulls , optical flow, poses , etc. Possible use of multiple cameras or RGB-D sensors.
  • Tracking and Recognition of elemental single-person actions (e.g. walking, running, jumping) and then composite
    behaviours such as “writing grafitti” and “aggression”
  • Recognition of complex interactions between two or more people such as “talking to each other”,
    “mobile phone stealing”. A specific user needs analysis will be carried out with the Toulouse transport operator
    (Tisseo).

This work is part of the ESAD-ZELT team working program at Cerema Toulouse. It represents a close collaboration
between Cerema Institute, Paul Sabatier University in Toulouse and Carlos III University in Madrid.

There will be opportunity to interact with technical experts from Toulouse transport operator (Tisseo) to
refine the safety/security user needs analysis.

Desired skills
The applicant would have to show good competences in signal and image processing, applied mathematics in data
processing. He (she) will have also have good knowledge in C/C++ programming. He (she) must have good oral
and written knowledge of French and English languages.

Stay conditions for the PhD student
-The PhD student will be employed by Cerema institute for a 3 years contract from autumn 2016 to autumn 2019
(exact dates will be fixed my mutual agreement with the student)
-The remuneration will be around  1500 Euros per month (net salary) for the first two years and 1700 Euros for the
third year
-The project will be developed mainly in the Cerema Toulouse premises as part of the ESAD-ZELT team :

PhD fellowships in European Network ARCADES

We are pleased to announce 13 open PhD positions within the European Network ARCADES: Algebraic Representations in Computer-Aided Design for complEx Shapes (see the official ARCADES Network web).

ARCADES is a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network in the framework of Horizon 2020, starting on January 1st, 2016, and lasts for 4 years. It includes 8 sites offering 13 PhD’s, 5 industrial partners, and is coordinated by ATHENA Research Innovation Center, Greece.

ARCADES offers a comprehensive training program at the crossroads of mathematics, computer-aided design (CAD) technology, and software development. It aims at disrupting the traditional paradigm in CAD by exploiting cutting-edge research in algorithm design and mathematics. Our methods lead to real-time modellers for architectural geometry and visualisation, to isogeometric and design-through-analysis software for shape optimisation, marine design and hydrodynamics, and tools for motion design, robot kinematics, path planning, and control of machining tools.

We offer

  • An exciting research environment including transnational visits to academic and industrial participants, and to Network-wide events.
  • Full time employment for 3 years, leading to a PhD.
  • A competitive (gross) salary comprising of a living allowance of 3110 €/month (country correction factor to be
    applied), mobility of 600 €/month, family allowance of 500 €/month (depending on family status).

Eligible Candidates should

  • Have a Master’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or Engineering (or an equivalent diploma allowing them to pursue a PhD).
  • Not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country where the PhD takes place, for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the recruitment date.
  • Be, at the date of recruitment, in the first 4 years of their research career, and not have a doctoral degree.
